Drumming on the facade – How to effectively prevent woodpecker damage

Woodpeckers are true masters at pecking – they can strike wood or facades up to 20 times per second. Especially in urban areas, woodpecker damage to facades is increasing because there are often fewer trees. Facades resemble natural tree trunks to the birds: the plaster looks like bark, and the insulation has a texture similar to wood.

Why woodpeckers attack facades:

  • Spring: Mating season – facades are used as resonators.

  • Autumn: Nesting – cities offer easily accessible “sleeping cavities,” while building one in a tree would take weeks.

Vertical structures like walls attract woodpeckers, especially if insects hide in cracks or under windowsills. Uncontrolled pecking can create deep holes in plaster and insulation. Water penetration often leads to costly facade damage, usually not covered by building insurance.

Woodpecker deterrence – legal & effective:
Since woodpeckers are protected by law, they cannot be hunted, but they can be repelled. Depending on the situation, we recommend a combination of the following methods:

  1. Decoys of great spotted woodpecker or black woodpecker – signaling that the territory is occupied.

  2. Bird of prey decoys (hawks) – natural predators that deter silently.

  3. Whistle tape / noise elements – when stretched tightly, they produce whistling sounds in the wind that repel woodpeckers.
